The Landscape Has Changed
In 2024 and 2025, companies scrambled to figure out how to interview candidates who could use AI tools. By 2026, most companies have settled on new formats. If you're preparing for interviews with 2022 knowledge, you're preparing for the wrong exam.
What Changed
1. Live Coding Has Evolved
Many companies now allow (or require) AI assistance in take-home assignments. The question shifted from "can you write the code?" to "can you build something that works?"
What's being evaluated:
- Problem decomposition
- Architecture decisions
- Code quality and review ability
- Debugging when AI output is wrong
2. Algorithm Questions Are Harder
Because everyone can Google and AI-generate solutions, the questions that remain in live coding are ones where execution actually matters: explaining your reasoning out loud, tracing through code on a whiteboard, discussing time/space complexity without running it.
Companies testing LeetCode-style questions are:
- Doing them in video interviews where you explain as you go
- Focusing on patterns, not syntax
- Testing "what would you do differently if performance mattered?"
3. System Design Is More Important
System design separates candidates who understand computing from those who memorize tutorials. It's harder to AI-assist in real-time because it requires synthesizing your specific constraints with general knowledge.
System design has expanded at many companies to include AI system design:
- How would you design a RAG system?
- How do you handle LLM latency in a user-facing product?
- What caching strategy for expensive AI calls?
4. Behavioral Interviews Haven't Changed
STAR method, competency-based questions, leadership principles โ this is unchanged. Humans interviewing humans about their actual experiences.
The Preparation Framework
Week 1-2: DSA Patterns
Don't do random LeetCode. Learn the 10 patterns that cover 80% of problems:
- Two Pointers
- Sliding Window
- Fast & Slow Pointers
- Tree BFS/DFS
- Graph traversal (BFS for shortest path, DFS for connectivity)
- Dynamic Programming (top-down memoization)
- Binary Search variations
- Heap/Priority Queue
- Union Find
- Backtracking
Do 3-5 problems per pattern. Focus on recognizing the pattern, not memorizing solutions.
Week 3: System Design
Learn these building blocks:
- SQL vs NoSQL and when
- Caching (Redis, CDN, application-level)
- Load balancing strategies
- Message queues and async processing
- SQL indexing and query optimization
- Horizontal vs vertical scaling
Practice designing: URL shortener, rate limiter, notification system, social feed.
Week 4: Behavioral + Practice
- Write STAR stories for your last 5 projects
- Do 3-5 mock interviews (Pramp, interviewing.io)
- Research the company: products, tech stack, engineering blog
What Interviewers Are Actually Testing
For mid/senior roles, the real questions behind every interview:

The AI Question They're Starting to Ask
At AI-forward companies, expect: "Describe a time you used AI tools effectively in your work."
Have a specific, technical answer. Not "I use Copilot for autocomplete." Something like:
"I used Claude Code to investigate a race condition in our async payment pipeline. Rather than spending a day manually tracing the call stack, I gave it the relevant files and the error log and let it trace the code paths. It identified that we had a TOCTOU bug in our idempotency check. I then wrote the fix myself after understanding the root cause."
That answer shows you know how to use AI as a tool, not a crutch.
Green Flags and Red Flags
Green flags interviewers look for:
- "I'm not sure about the optimal solution โ here's what I know and here's how I'd approach finding out"
- Drawing diagrams before writing code
- Asking clarifying questions about scale, constraints, existing infrastructure
- "That's a good point I hadn't considered"
Red flags:
- Silent coding with no communication
- Immediately writing code without discussing approach
- "I'd just Google this" without being able to discuss the concept
- Defending a wrong answer rather than updating on new information
